Update for Fall 2020:

We are writing to provide you with resources and guidance for assessments this semester. We have developed a resource page to help you align your assessment strategy with your overall teaching strategy.  We also wanted to encourage those of you who are accustomed to using Scantron to consider using contactless alternative online methods that can be consistently delivered for students attending remotely and in-person


ITS will offer Scantron self-service scanning of paper bubble sheets this semester, but due to safety precautions, availability and support are greatly limited. Please note:

  • The Scantron stations are available when Homer Babbidge Library is open, and you do not need a reservation. The library is operating on a reduced schedule.
  • The ITS Technology Support Center will be temporarily located near the main entrance of the library. Consequently, no staff will be on-hand to support use of the Scantron.
  • Supplies will be available for self-service cleaning before and after use. ITS will also regularly clean the equipment.

ITS provides an exam scanning service through Scantron. This service is available to all UConn instructors. 

The Scantron Exam Scanning service scores up to five different versions of multiple choice exams that can have up to 200 questions. Student exams are scored against an answer key provided by the instructor. Instructors may scan the tests at one of two desktop scanners located on the first floor of the Homer Babbidge Library near the Technology Support Center. Results are emailed to the instructor. For assistance, email examscanning@uconn.edu.

Alternatives to Using Scantron

Bring-your-own-device (BYOD) Testing: For faculty looking to move away from paper exams or Scantrons, online testing is available through HuskyCT. Online testing can be offered in the classroom or as at-home assessment. For faculty wishing to administer online testing in the classroom (BYOD testing), UConn’s ITS has verified that all lecture classrooms have Wi-Fi capabilities sufficient to support this testing. Any classroom listed in UConn’s classroom directory (https://classrooms.uconn.edu/classroom-directory/) as “fixed-auditorium has been verified.   

The Testing Center: Provides efficient administration and proctoring of semester exams to UConn students as well as students from other institutions. The UConn Testing Center adheres to the National College Testing Association (NCTA) Professional Standards and Guidelines and provides a valuable service to students, faculty and staff by promoting honesty, integrity and fairness in a helpful and supportive testing environment.

The Respondus LockDown Browser: LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment when used for taking a test in HuskyCT. When taking a test using LockDown Browser, students are unable to print, copy, go to other websites, access other applications, or close a test until it is submitted for grading.
